Kristin Yates

I have been making artis books for many years, and I am still fascinated by how many different forms a book can take. I enjoy experimenting with structure, materials, images, and sometimes text. My books may include original artwork, collage, found materials, or unexpected elements that become part of the book itself.

More recently, metalsmithing has become part of my work and has begun to find its way into my books, as well. In my latest piece, six original collages form the pages of the book, with a metal collage inset into the cover. I like the contrast between paper and metal and the possibilities that come from combining techniques and materials that aren’t usually used together.

Experimentation is central to my practice. I am less interested in mastering a single technique or repeating a recognizable form than in learning what a material or structure makes possible. I often begin with an idea, an intriguing material, a piece of original artwork, or a technical question and allow the work to evolve through the process of making. Whether I am working with paper, metal, collage, text, found materials, or a combination of them, I am interested in creating objects that reward curiosity - pieces that reveal themselves gradually and encourage the viewer to look again.
